Woodbond 1920 meets ASTM D-5572

Just Add the Catalyst:
Franklin Adhesives & Polymers’ Revolutionary Woodbond 1920 Dry Use Adhesive Easily Converts into Powerful Adhesive for Wet Use Finger Jointing

Woodbond 1920 meets ASTM D-5572 dry use standard for finger jointing but can easily be mixed with a catalyst to meet the ASTM standard for wet use applications, too. This exceptional versatility, coupled with several characteristics for easy handling, save time and money in the production of millwork and other non-structural wood products.

Franklin Adhesives & Polymers, a division of Franklin International, has simplified the production of finger-jointed wood products with the introduction of a versatile, cost-effective new adhesive, Woodbond® 1920, that can be used as is for dry-use applications – or easily converted for wet use.

Woodbond 1920 is a one-component polyvinyl acetate (PVA) emulsion adhesive that meets the ASTM D-5572-99 dry use standard for finger jointing of interior wood products, such as trim molding. However, manufacturers can simply mix the adhesive with an aluminum chloride catalyst to create a low-cost, highly water-resistant adhesive that easily surpasses the ASTM D-5572 wet use standard for non-structural lumber products, to be exposed to outdoor elements.

Further, mixing is quick and easy; within five to ten minutes, the manufacturer can make a powerful water-resistant adhesive – with a long, minimum pot life of eight hours.

In addition to its versatility, Woodbond 1920 also speeds up production through its shear-thinning formulation, enabling effortless extrusion into most finger joint application systems. The crew also can filter the adhesive directly from the tote, minimizing equipment clogging. And a low minimum use temperature range of 40 to 43 degrees Fahrenheit enables manufacturers to use this adhesive longer into colder seasons or on chillier mornings.
“Woodbond 1920 reflects our commitment to continually developing powerful, cost-effective solutions for wood assembly,” said Jaye Schroeder, vice president of wood market development at Franklin Adhesives & Polymers. “It offers our customers an affordable, viable alternative to formulas developed strictly for wet use applications. We are thrilled to add this product to our comprehensive line of finger jointing adhesives.”

Woodbond 1920 is among a broad offering of adhesives formulated by Franklin Adhesives & Polymers to meet a wide variety of applications within the millwork, furniture and engineered lamination industries. In addition to Woodbond, the division produces adhesives under the brand names Titebond, Advantage, Assembly, ReacTITE and Multibond to meet the full scope of needs within woodworking plants.
